Student Background
I get the opportunity to work with a 5th grader for three weeks, meeting two times each week. My students name is Leonard and he is at a 645 lexile reading level, which is around a third grade reading level. I had Leonard complete an interest inventory so I could figure out what his interests were and just a little information about him in general. What I learned about Leonard from the interest inventory is that he really enjoys books about science and mystery. He does not love reading but he does not hate reading either. He as a few pets at home that he loves to play with and spend time with. Leonard also has a younger brother, an older brother, and divorced parents. He likes to go mini golfing with his family. His favorite subject is math and his favorite part of the school day is lunch. I then did a motivation survey with my student to see what motivates him as a reader. I learned that he enjoys free reading especially at school. Leonard enjoys starting new books and likes to go to the bookstore or library to pick out new books. He does not enjoy academic reading, reading aloud, or answering questions about what his reading was about. This information helped me get to know about my students, what motivates him as a reading, and what I can do to help him enjoy his reading time.

Personal Introduction
My name is Jayde Murray. I am a junior at Grand View University majoring in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education. I will be tutoring with a struggling reading for five or six days at an elementary school. The purpose of spending time with this struggling reader is to help to improve their skills and help them become better readers. This project is also going to help me learn how to help a student better their skills and experience real-life teaching practices. I am excited for this new learning and teaching experience.
